I know I know…this may seem a bit old school – you reading a blog post about a natural hair routine (lol). But here’s a cheap & easy wash & go routine that will have your curls juicy, shiny, defined and poppin’!
Wash your hair with your favorite shampoo/conditioner. Currently, I am LOVING the Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Shampoo & Conditioner! The shampoo gets my hair nice and clean without feeling stripped and conditioner has the most gorgeous texture & slip, making it a breeze to detangle my hair. You can purchase the set of 2 from Amazon here.
After washing & conditioning, towel dry your hair leaving it damp and apply your favorite leave-in conditioner. I always reach for the Creme of Nature Pure Honey Leave-In Conditioner. This product is for dry damaged hair and it’s amazing!
Here’s the product that makes this wash & go the best wash & go you’ll ever have: The Wetline Xtreme Professional Extra Hold Wet Line Styling Gel. This is seriously the BEST gel in it’s price range!!! I got a 35.27 oz jar from Target for only $2.99! This gel beautifully pairs with the Creme of Nature Pure Honey Leave-In Conditioner and has a great hold and doesn’t leave any white flakes or filmy cast. You can find it pretty much anywhere hair gel is sold. I’ve linked to it on Amazon if you’re Amazon Prime obsessed like I am haha.
The keys to definition and longevity (in my experience) when it comes to a wash & go is making sure that you really focus the products on your roots first and allowing your hair to fully dry. I demonstrated how I apply these products in the YouTube video that goes along with this blog post here. Although I rarely dry my hair with direct heat such as blow drying or sitting under a hooded dryer, air drying does the trick just as well. I make sure to wear a bonnet at night or sleep on a 100% silk or satin pillowcase to preserve my juicy curls.
When It’s time to refresh my wash & gos, either I’ll fluff my hair in the morning, or if I want more definition again, I get my hair wet in the shower to reactivate the product! Then I’ll gently comb through my hair if needed and fix my edges (cause you know those gotta be on fleek!).
Wash & gos have always been my favorite natural hairstyle – and in my humble opinion, it’s the easiest! I’m a busy wife & mom who always has a million things going on…the last thing I need to be worried about is my hair, chile. Wash & gos are so convenient and beautiful.
Here are a few FAQs that I often get about my hair:
What is your hair type?
I’m not big on hair typing because I don’t believe our hair falls into a specific category of numbers and letters; but if I had to go by the hair typing chart, I’d say I’m between a 3C-4A.
What kind of haircut do you have?
It’s tapered. When it was shorter and I had to go to the barbershop to maintain my style & shape, I always requested to get the sides bald faded and the top was left alone. So the sides and the back are the same length and the top gradually gets longer starting at my crown.
Are you fully natural? Do you get texturizers?
Yes, I am fully natural. I do not have any chemicals in my hair except for my jet black color. This is how my hair grows directly from my scalp!
Is your hair thick or thin?
I’m not really sure how to answer this one because my hair is crazy lol. In some areas, it’s a different texture and density. I think it’s safe to say that my hair is thick and fine…not necessarily thin.
What were those tools you were using in the video? The small comb and spray bottle?
I used a double-ended edge tool. You can get one super cheap at your local beauty supply store or you can purchase a 5-pack here. The spray bottle I was using is from Pattern Beauty and it is fabulous! you can find it at Ulta Beauty!
